Kelcie Miller-Anderson is an acclaimed innovator, social entrepreneur, and dynamic speaker committed to reshaping environmental science and climate leadership through inclusivity and innovation. Growing up in Calgary, she developed an early love for nature, which led her to begin developing environmental technologies as a teenager. By the age of 15, she was conducting research on novel remediation methods for the oil and gas, and at 21, she founded MycoRemedy, a company dedicated to using mycoremediation to clean polluted environments safely and effectively. A fierce advocate for sustainability and industry transformation, she has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20, Next 36, and a Manning Youth Innovation Award winner.
Kelcie is also a sought-after speaker who shares her insights on environmental innovation, accessibility in climate leadership, and the power of curiosity in solving big problems. She has spoken at leading conferences, corporate events, and universities, addressing topics such as youth-led innovation, disability inclusion in climate action, and breaking barriers in science and entrepreneurship. This is an excerpt from Youth Science Centre's Advocating for Diversity with Kelcie Miller-Anderson, where she discusses how her lived experience has shaped her journey through science, entrepreneurship, and advocacy, all driven by a commitment to using innovation for meaningful impact.
Although my work started in science and then branched into entrepreneurship and now advocacy – it has all been driven and rooted in the desire to use innovation to create impact. I never thought I would be anything but a scientist – it was my first love after all, but I realized that the reason I loved science was because it allowed me to solve problems and create solutions.
As much as I love pure science and being in the lab, when I was diagnosed with a rare disease and became chronically ill in my early 20’s it became clear to me that the best way for me to really magnify my impact and create change wasn’t by being in the lab but instead was by creating opportunities and empowering other young people to use innovation to solve problems in their communities and the world.
