Solange Lalonde stands at the forefront of educational transformation as the Managing Director of RMTL Consulting Inc., an Indigenous-owned firm specializing in innovative educational practices. Solange introduced the Relational Model for Teaching and Learning (RMTL) in her Master’s thesis at the University of Calgary. This model, grounded in the UNESCO pillars of education and informed by Indigenous methodologies, serves as a lifelong learning framework across various sectors. Under her leadership, RMTL Consulting Inc. has developed licensed programs used for curriculum review, development, online learning, and competency-based education, catering to a diverse clientele including universities, federal government departments, social justice organizations, and private firms.


Solange’s commitment to Indigenous education was also evident during her tenure as the Associate Director of Métis Education at the Rupertsland Institute Métis Centre of Excellence. Here, she influenced educational policy and advocated for the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in all educational sectors at the ministerial level.


As a Provincial Lead Developer and Facilitator for the Alberta Regional Professional Development Consortia, Solange spearheaded a professional learning project that reached approximately 44,000 teachers and 8,000 school administrators, transforming Indigenous education reporting and assessment across the province.

How does their lived experience shape their qualification?
 

My lived experiences deeply inform my qualifications as a speaker by shaping both my perspective and approach. I finished three degrees as a single mother and experienced how learning and education can create generational change and opportunities; I understand how one message, one insight, can be a life-changing turning point. I’m neurodivergent, have experienced poverty and discrimination, and I have also benefitted from access to education, quality health care, and social supports. My unique life experiences, personally and professionally, provide me with a wealth of stories I can draw from to share relevant details that support the intent of a presentation.


I grew up immersed in the dominant culture in a French-Canadian Euro-centric household and community and I was denied learning about my Indigenous ancestry until adulthood. My first degree was a Bachelor of Arts in History with a focus on Canadian history, yet I did not learn about the story of this land, this place, nor the people from this territory. I remember the day I first learned about residential schools and the visceral reaction I had when I realized I had gone through so much “education” without ever learning the truth about the story of Canada I had…
